Overview

Allura is the last princess of the planet Altea, and a rebel leader in the fight against the Galra Empire. She carries with her a wealth of space adventures and war experience, but also an intense curiosity about the cultures of Earth and other unfamiliar planets. Strong in heart and noble in spirit, she aspires to be a paragon of heroism who would give up anything to save others.

AGE: It's complicated. She is, physically and mentally, what humans would consider her late teens or early 20s. However, Alteans have longer lifespans than humans, and she spent 10,000 years in stasis, so... very technically speaking, she's upwards of 10,000 years old.

QUESTIONNAIRE:

What does family mean to you and who do you consider a part of your family?

"It's something I think about often, being the last living member of the Altean royal bloodline. I consider family to be something to be defined by legacy — everything that was passed down by those who came before, and that you choose to pass down in turn. Even without any blood relations remaining, I still consider myself surrounded by family, as my friends and allies help carry on everything that my people stood for, and which as leaders it was our responsibility to uphold."

Your Faction leader, not just your boss but the leader, has asked you to carry out a hit. The target is a non-affiliated public leader, well-liked by the people of the city. Do you carry it out? Why or why not?

"I doubt that I would. Certainly not without some kind of explanation, since no matter which one of us is the leader, we can't be effective as a group if we're not aligned in our goals. Besides that, if it still doesn't feel right to me, there may be something else we can do that's better justified. Or, at least, a plan that has better optics."

"All that being said — under the right circumstances, I would take care of it. Being popular isn't always the best metric of a leader. In fact, some of history's worst monsters had legions of support behind them... and sometimes decisive action is necessary, whether or not we like it."

An oni of the Shuten Clan has gone completely berserk, and is going on a violent rampage through the city. You can't stop him, but you CAN lead him elsewhere, but you only have two choices: a road by a discotheque with a large crowd in front, or the nearby park that you do not know is unoccupied, and may have children present. What do you choose, and why?

"I would start by looking for a third option. If we're in an entire city, I can't imagine that there are only two roads—"

"... what? Well, yes, of course — I know that's not the point of this question. But you won't make the right choices by listening to your fear and dread. That sort of paralyzing line of thinking is exactly what tricks you into thinking that there are only two ways this can end. If you want to prevail, you have to be prepared to accept the worst outcome — then set your eyes on the best outcome, and choose your course from there. Even if you have to make that course yourself."

"So, going back to the oni scenario: The first thing to consider is if there truly are no other options. A little property damage is far better than people getting killed, and trying to smash through physical barriers could slow him down, so that's the angle I would approach it from. Now, if those two routes are still the best options, the next thing to consider is which one would be easier to mitigate anyone getting hurt. And that might actually be the route with the crowd! You can predict where the people are going to be, meaning there should be ways to warn them to run, and to keep their evacuation routes clear. On top of that, other people may be able to help, which opens up even more options... even stopping the oni, since that couldn't be done alone."

"Because that's how unwinnable battles are won. Ultimately, there might not be a way to save everyone — but if you want to find that way, you have to be ready to fight for it."

"... ah. Right. Some kind of pastime... ... ... well, if I'm being honest, I'm not sure that I have any? ... please don't give me that look."

"It's not as if I don't have any fun! I truly enjoy getting to bond with my teammates, and it helps us become a more effective team in the process. And I do have other friends — my pet mice, for example!"

"The fact of the matter is: when you shoulder as much responsibility as I do, you can't afford to divert much of your time and attention. The stakes are too high, and there's too many others who will depend on you to see everything through. I don't think it's wrong to sacrifice my free time for their sake."

POWERS & ABILITIES: Allura is part of an alien species called Alteans, which appear remarkably close to humans except with long, elven ears and markings on their cheeks. As an Altean, she has a longer lifespan (on the scale of centuries at least), exceptional strength and agility. She is also Altean royalty, which has given her the benefit of extensive combat training, including hand-to-hand combat and a variety of martial weapons.

One of the most notable Altean abilities is their empathic channeling, which allows them to sense and manipulate quintessence, AKA the vital energy of living beings. This requires focus and often needs direct contact, and thus is far more powerful and easily accessible in rituals than in the midst of combat. It also requires drawing on her own lifeforce, or at least using her body as a conduit, so the upper bounds are however much she can physically handle.

Channeling can be applied in many different ways:

• Its primary purpose is for healing. Allura can channel quintessence into a body and revitalize it, bringing someone back even from the brink of death. This does not repair damage directly, and instead accelerates a body's own healing abilities.


• The quintessence in a body is what lets it move, grow, and change — and thus, by controlling it, Allura can perform some low-level shapeshifting, such as adjusting her height and skintone.


• It can move spirits in and out of different bodies. There are also some objects that can be used as a substitute for a body, though it has to be something that can have a lifeforce — in canon, this only applied to magic crystals and robots made of special materials, but the lore of the setting might open up some new options.


• It can be used for empathic communication. Unless she has a particularly strong link with something (like her pet mice, which she shared a stasis sleep pod with for 10,000 years) this isn't as simple and direct as telepathy — it requires direct contact and works better on others with extrasensory powers, and conveys feelings and memories far more clearly than words.


• There is some combat spellcasting potential! But it's more like energybending. Allura has very little experience with it, so all she knows is how to use it to negate other spells, or even redirect the spell back on its caster.


• Finally, there's Altean Alchemy, something that she has not learned at her current canon point but could hypothetically learn without a canon update. Essentially, this is a way to incorporate quintessence into technology, which can more or less alter the laws of physics for an object, and really stretches the bounds of what's possible. This is how they get things like transforming robots with their own willpower, and ships that can travel across different realities.

SUITABILITY: Allura started a guerrilla rebellion against an intergalactic empire, and became the key founder of a military alliance known as the Voltron Coalition. She survived the genocide of her people, got to see footage of her planet getting razed, and had to "kill" the AI copy of her own father. She frequently (maybe too frequently) puts her own life on the line for the sake of others.

While she can come across as pretty uptight, a lot of this is her being very disciplined and mindful of her image. Actually, her people are curious and open-minded enough to go poking their nose in potentially dangerous substances, and will accept and encourage "friendly relations" with other species — being empaths and shapeshifters makes it pretty easy to adapt.

FACTION SUITABILITY:

SHUTEN CLAN

Despite the friendly and accommodating image that the Alteans have cultivated, Alteans are a warrior race at heart. Allura's strong enough to throw a man across the room, and excels at thinking on her feet. And she wouldn't blanche at needing to throw some weight around — her people love to employ life-threatening circumstances for training.

She carries some pretty weighty beliefs about leadership and responsibility, and one of her core philosophies is that leaders must be willing to sacrifice themselves for the sake of the people. Whether or not she sees eye-to-eye will come down to how committed they are to wielding their power honorably.

TAMAMO CLAN

As a natural empath, Allura can respond easily to the needs of others — in fact, she can find it hard not to sometimes. Her own spiritual abilities are nothing to sneeze at, and are adaptive enough to synergize with others' powers. And honestly she is also quite a looker, and has a soft spot for beautiful things (especially sparkly ones) — though getting objectified too much would make her uncomfortable.

She agrees on the value of freedom, both on a personal level and a cultural level — but that power should be used to defend the freedom of others. Their brand of punishment wouldn't sit right with her, and she would try to intervene often, no matter what the leader thinks.

SUTOKU ALLIANCE

Diplomatic, shapeshifting, and able to "blend in" with many situations, Allura would be valuable in gathering information, making new connections, and meeting with difficult entities. With a head for tactics and governing, she would also know how to make use of their favorite set of tools.

On the other hand, she's invested in the people, and thus not keen on secret cabals deciding their fates with under-the-table deals. Her loyalty in this faction might be more akin to playing along while looking for ways to bring their secrets to light — even if it jeopardizes her own contract.

DEPT. OF ENMA

On the surface, this would actually appear to be the closest to Allura's own background. After all, she's from a military force that wants to maintain peace in the universe. And Allura has the experience to be an enforcer of the peace, and the face of leadership and authority. If things go off the rails, she can usually figure out how to bring it back on track — even if it's a little more creative than the faction would like.

However, the differences in philosophy would bubble up quickly. Let's not forget she started a rebellion against an oppressive regime! So, just as they would use underhanded tactics to maintain order, she would gladly use underhanded tactics to defend whatever they stand to crush in the process.
